ICP and anti-ICP
In this lesson
- Write a time-bound ICP
- Name the people you will refuse to target
An ICP is not a demographic poster. It is a description of the buyer you can serve profitably in a defined window. An anti-ICP is just as important: it stops you from buying the wrong clicks.
Write the refusal first
A useful Northfield ICP names four things: who (commuter, family replacing a dead car, first-time buyer who needs financing), where (Frederick and a commuting radius — not “the mid-Atlantic”), when (need a car in the next 30 days), and the moment of need (lease ended, engine died, new job). The anti-ICP is the budget saver: nationwide classic collectors, tire-kickers who want a weekend toy, people who will never qualify for the same-day financing decision, and anyone Dana cannot actually serve from a 55-car used lot. If your ICP could describe every dealer in Maryland, it is not an ICP. If your anti-ICP is empty, you will buy the wrong clicks and call it “awareness.”
For Northfield, “anyone who likes cars” is not an ICP. “A Frederick-area commuter who needs a reliable used vehicle in the next 30 days and may need financing” is closer.
Exercise
Draft the ICP
Write ICP, anti-ICP, and the moment of need (what just happened in their life).
