What marketing is actually for

In this lesson

  • Define marketing as a system that creates the next valuable action
  • Separate traffic from demand

A simple definition

Marketing is not “posting” or “being online.” It is the system that finds people with a real problem, makes a clear offer, and helps them take the next useful action. For Northfield, that action is a booked sales appointment — not a like, and not an anonymous session.

Traffic is not demand

Dana already has a traffic story: sessions are up and appointments are flat. That is the whole course in one sentence. Extra sessions can be employees, bots, people looking up hours, or shoppers who never saw a booking path. Demand is a person in commuting distance who needs a reliable used car this month and can be asked to book a 48-hour test drive. If you cannot draw a line from a tactic to that person taking that action, you are decorating the lot, not marketing it. Later courses will teach Search structure, Meta creative, SEO maps, and GA4 events. This course teaches the judgment those courses assume: name the action, name who is worth the $3,000, and refuse the rest.

If a tactic cannot be connected to a booked appointment (or a step that reliably leads there), it is decoration.

Exercise

First win (10 minutes)

Write Northfield’s next valuable action in one sentence. Then list two metrics that look good but might be lying.

Deliverable: 3 short lines in your notes. You will use them in the ICP assignment.
