Rank vs citation, then the engines · 26 min

Two jobs: rank vs get cited

In this lesson

  • Explain why a #1 organic URL can still be absent from ChatGPT, Perplexity, or AI Overviews
  • Name the GEO question for a lot versus an emergency-heat shop — not the SEO volume question

The job test

Classic SEO tries to win a blue link: a human scans ten titles and clicks. Generative engines try to finish the question in the answer box. If ChatGPT, Perplexity, or a Google AI Overview names a national chain and never sends the click, the #1 ranking still lost the appointment. GEO is the work of becoming a source the model will mention, cite, or recommend. Keyword volume does not measure that. A page can rank and still never appear as a footnote. A page can be cited from page two. Treat “where do we rank?” and “who does the answer name?” as two columns, never one.

What “cited” actually means

Cited: the answer names the business and treats it as a source — a link, a numbered footnote, or “according to [site].” Mentioned: the name appears with no attribution (easy to hallucinate, easy to drop next week). Absent: the answer recommends someone else or stays generic. Hallucinated: it invents hours, a VIN, a $129 price that is not on the site, or a shop that does not exist. Ranking #1 for “used cars Frederick MD” can sit next to ChatGPT saying “try a national chain.” That is not an SEO emergency by itself. It is a citation gap. Do not “fix” it with more keyword volume.

Two businesses, two citation jobs

Northfield’s GEO job is inventory citation: when a buyer asks who has a used CR-V in Frederick, or who lets you take a car home for 48 hours, the answer should be able to name Dana’s lot and point at a crawlable vehicle or offer page — not a poem on the homepage. Cedar & Stone’s GEO job is service and emergency-heat citation: when someone in Hagerstown or Williamsport asks who to call for heat tonight, or what a fall tune-up costs, the answer should be able to name Priya’s licensed shop on Dual Highway and the written-estimate rule. Same method. Different assets. A keyword map that lists “used cars” and “AC repair” with search volume is SEO homework. It is not this course.

If your first slide is a keyword-volume chart, you are in the wrong course. The first slide is: for this prompt, on this engine, were we cited, mentioned, absent, or hallucinated?

Exercise

Label four scenes

For each scene write rank-win / citation-loss / both / neither, and one sentence why. (1) Northfield is #1 for “used cars Frederick MD”; ChatGPT names a national chain and does not link the lot. (2) Cedar & Stone is not on page one for “AC repair”; Perplexity footnotes their Dual Highway page for “emergency heat Hagerstown tonight.” (3) Dana ranks #1 and an AI Overview lists Northfield with a link to /inventory. (4) Priya’s GBP is strong; ChatGPT invents a Saturday 24/7 dispatch she does not offer.

Deliverable: Four rows: scene, label, one-sentence why. No keyword-volume column.
