Message match and the Saturday path · 28 min
The four-line message-match audit
In this lesson
- Write a four-line audit: ad headline → H1 → CTA → first form field
- Name the break when a Search ad for a unit lands on a brand homepage
Four lines, not a vibe
Message match is a line-by-line job. Open a four-row table and fill it before you talk about color, speed, or “the brand story.” Row 1 — Ad headline: the exact words the shopper clicked. Row 2 — H1: the first heading they can read without scrolling. Row 3 — Primary CTA: the first button that claims to continue the job. Row 4 — First form field: the first input the page asks them to type. If any row answers a different question than the row above, you have a break. Feelings about the photography are not a row.
Worked audit — “used CR-V Frederick” on the homepage
Dana’s Search ad headline: Used CR-Vs in Frederick. Assumed homepage: H1 “Welcome to the Northfield Family.” Primary CTA: Learn More (or a slider with no cars). First form field: in the footer, Social Security Number “to pre-qualify.” Line 1 promises a unit in a town. Line 2 answers “who are we.” Line 3 answers “read a story.” Line 4 answers “hand over a credit file.” Sessions can rise on that click. Saturday appointments will not. The first fix is not a warmer hero — it is a landing URL whose H1, CTA, and first field all still mean “used CR-V in Frederick, book it.”
Do not invent scroll-depth, heatmaps, or “Google said the homepage Quality Score is fine.” If you cannot see the live page, label the four lines as an assumed path and still fill the table.
Exercise
Fill the four-line table
For the Northfield Search ad “Used CR-Vs in Frederick,” write the four rows (ad headline, H1, CTA, first form field) on the assumed homepage path. Then write the four rows you would ship on a CR-V booking page that also carries the 48-hour test drive. Do not discuss match types or pixels.
Deliverable: Two four-row tables: current assumed path vs replacement path.
