Write the offer before the adjective · 28 min

A keepable offer has a verb and a limit

In this lesson

  • Rewrite a slogan into a keepable offer
  • Name who the offer is not for

Slogans feel good and book nothing

“Family-Owned Excellence” and “Best Deals Around” are adjectives. An offer is a verb a shopper can use this month: take a 48-hour test drive, get a same-day financing decision on approved credit, book Saturday 9–5. Limits make it true: approved credit, inventory changes daily, Frederick lot only. Dana already has the offer in the brief. The homework is to stop burying it under brand poetry. If you add “lowest prices in Maryland,” you created a claim you cannot defend. If you add “everyone approved,” you created a lie.

Anti-offer is positioning

Northfield is not a no-credit-needed clickbait lot and not a new-car franchise. The offer is for people who can visit Frederick this month and want a used unit they can live with for 48 hours before they decide. It is not for “free car” shoppers, not for people who want a Baltimore delivery Dana will not do, and not for research-only “how does a CVT work” readers. Write the anti-offer in a sentence. Copy that tries to please the anti-buyer will water the verb until it is a slogan again.

The 30-day keep test

Before a line ships, ask: can Dana’s closer still say this on day 30 if rates move, if the CR-V sells, if finance leaves at 3 on Saturday? The 48-hour test drive survives if the lot still hands over keys with a license conversation. Same-day financing survives if a human sits at the desk before the hour you printed. “Lowest in Maryland” dies the first time a competitor prints a smaller number. “Everyone approved” dies the first time a buyer is declined. Write the keep test in the margin of every headline. If the margin says unknown, the line does not ship.

Say it at the desk, then write it

Stand where Dana’s closer stands on Saturday. What do they actually say in the first thirty seconds? Usually: we have used CUVs, you can take one for 48 hours, finance can decide the same day on approved credit if you sit before they leave, we are here until 5. That paragraph is the offer. “Family-owned excellence” is what they say when they do not know what to say. Write the closer paragraph first. Then cut it to a one-liner. Then put the one-liner on the page and the ad. If the closer would not say it, it is not copy — it is a mood board.

Exercise

Offer vs slogan table

Rewrite five lines into keepable offers or mark them kill: Family-Owned Excellence; Best Deals Around; 48-hour test drive; everyone approved; same-day financing decision on approved credit.

Deliverable: 5-row table: keep / rewrite / kill + why.
