Copy QA: the line that must not ship
In this lesson
- Red-line a bad homepage paragraph
Read it out loud on the lot
Bad: “Northfield is the #1 family-owned destination for unbeatable deals and effortless financing for everyone.” Red-line #1, unbeatable, effortless, everyone. Keep: Frederick, used cars, 48-hour test drive, same-day decision on approved credit, Saturday 9–5. QA checklist: would a closer say it; can we keep it 30 days; does it finish the query; did we steal it; did we invent a payment. Fail any box and the line does not ship.
QA out loud, then ship or cut
Print the homepage paragraph. Cross out every adjective a lawyer or a closer would not defend for 30 days. What remains should still name Frederick, the 48-hour test drive, same-day decision on approved credit, and Saturday 9–5. If nothing remains, you did not have an offer — you had a mood. Rewrite from the one-liner, not from the leftover adjectives. Do not borrow a national group’s “we move metal” line to fill the hole. Do not add a payment. Do not add #1. The red-lined page is the assignment, not a cleaner PDF of the same slogan.
Good copy is a closer’s sentence with a limit. Pretty copy without a limit is a slogan.
